- Is this HYROX?
No, this is a Hybrid Fitness race event, as is HYROX, Wild Hybrid, DEKA, Deadly Dozen, ATHX, and many more. It's a great alternative if you're after a shorter time duration, varied stations, changing format, and/or are training for one of the other events or have been unable to get tickets, or justify their higher prices. The majority of our athletes compete across all of the above.
- What is different about HEX?
Our goal is to provide the best parts of other hybrid fitness races, where you know exactly what stations/distances you'll face and can tailor your training, plus the variety of functional fitness competitions. Also you don't have to call yourself a 'Hybrid Rockstar', and we're more self aware about our own cringiness?
- What should I wear?
Comfortable exercise clothing. We would recommend running trainers as the workout is 50% running, with good grip for the sled push station.
- Can I wear headphones?
No. Where the run sections are outdoor there may be vehicles or other dangers, and you need to be able to communicate with your judge and partner.
- Can I wear other accessories?
Weightlifting supports (e.g. belts, knee and elbow sleeves) are permitted but not recommended. Items to assist with grip (e.g. straps, gloves and gymnastic grips) are not permitted.
- How many runs are there?
6 ranging from 200m to 1200m at 200m increments, plus a final 100m sprint.
- How far is the run total?
4.3km, plus a small amount of running to and from stations in the HEX arena. Less than a park run, and a little over half of a HYROX.
- How many stations are there?
6: 60m Sled Push, 240m Farmer's Carry, 90m Burpee Broad Jumps, 90m Sandbag Lunges, 120 Wall Ball Shots and 42/60 Calorie Assault Bike.
- What are the weights for each station?
For the Open Category: 120kg/180kg Sled Push (inc. sled), 2x 16kg/24kg Kettlebells Farmer's Carry, 10kg/20kg Sandbag Lunge, 4kg/6kg Wall Ball Shots
- What do the weight numbers mean?
The first number is the weight for Female Pairs, the second is for Mixed and Male Pairs.
- What is the workout order?
Alternate run and station until all 6 run distances and the 6 different stations have been completed, and then finish with a 100m sprint. For HEXrace #000002 there will be a fixed order in the section below, this will change with future events.
- Will all events be the same?
No. The majority of events will follow the format above, but with varied ordering (there are over half a million combinations without changing any of the distances or stations), plus we're hoping to introduce the ability to choose your own order.
We'd also like to put on more varied events as well - HEXternal, HEXmachina, etc. If we can awkwardly shoehorn the word HEX in, we're game.
- Is there a world championship, or qualification standards for future events?
Not yet...
- Are there multiple team categories?
Future events will offer solo, trio and relay options.
- What about PRO categories, or scaling down?
Our Open category is intended to be the baseline experience, suitable for all athletes, although we can offer scaling options on the day if required.
With HEXrace #000002 we've introduced HEXL; our HYROX PRO equivalent - same runs, same stations, more challenging weights and calories.
HEXRACE #000002
- Can I do the race solo, or as a team of three, four, or six?
This event is pairs only. Future events will offer solo, and relay options.
- What is the event order?
400m Run, 60m Sled Push, 800m Run, 90m BBJ, 1200m Run, 42/60 Assault Bike Calories, 1000m Run, 240m Farmer's Carry, 600m Run, 90m Sandbag Lunge, 200m Run, 120 Wall Ball Shots, 100m Sprint
- Where are those stations located?
All stations will be inside UNIT 1, ordered right to left as you enter, with the exception of the wall balls.
- Will there be music?
There will be music at Compound Strength and Conditioning for the stations, for the runs you'll just have your partner to keep you going. Hope they've got pipes.
- Do I need to count my own reps and memorise the station order/locations?
Your judge will count your reps/calories/lengths/meters, plus advise you which distance run you're about to do, and which station and area you'll be returning to after.
- Can I carry a drink?
If you want to run with one you can, but there will be a station provided where you can leave one when entering/exiting the HEX arena. Please do not leave a drink or any other item near the stations where it may interfere with other athletes.
- What is the run terrain?
It's a private drive and public road course, so primarily asphalt and concrete.
- How will I know when to turn around?
We recommend familiarising yourself with the flyover video on YouTube before the race. Each turnaround point will be marked however, with orange chalk on the ground and a distance poster.
- What if it rains?
Only the running will take place outside of cover.
- What time do I need to arrive?
The first athletes will start at 9 if you want to spectate everyone. Otherwise, we'd recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your provisional start time to register, warm up, and cover any questions.
- Are spectators free?
Yes, and very welcome!
- Will there be a live leaderboard?
The leaderboard will be available on Competition Corner on the day.
- Will there be a podium?
Yes, we'll recognise the top 3 teams in each category.
- Are there prizes for finishers?
There will be finisher patches for this and all future events... 👀
- Special prizes for unbroken?
No prize yet, but massive bragging rights to any team that can complete all stations (but especially the wall balls) with only 1 change 👀
- What if I get injured?
We'll have trained first aiders as part of the HEX team.
- What if there isn't enough equipment at each station when we get there?
We've aimed to space each pair enough that this shouldn't be an issue, but if it does occur we'll handle it the same way as HYROX - your judge will pause your time while you wait for the equipment to free up.
- I have another question that isn't answered.
Please contact us @hexrace on instagram.
- What if I have a a question on the day?
Please find one of the team members in a HEX t-shirt who isn't actively judging, and we'll do our best to help.
